I was browsing through an influencer’s Instagram yesterday. And I found out she went to a talk/conference that featured Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Renni Eddo-Lodge, earlier this month…and I was annoyed.
I was annoyed because I couldn’t believe that I had missed what seemed like such a golden opportunity. I highly respect both women in their fields and thoroughly enjoy their work…and I missed the chance to see them live in action.
It occurred to me that the same way this Influencer managed to find out about the event and actually go to it could have been the same way I could have found out about it and gone myself. The difference is I haven’t exposed myself to platforms or mediums where I would be privy to that information. I’ve formulated a little bubble or cocoon for myself where I can only access a specific type of information and after seeing that post…after seeing Chimamanda and Renni sitting together on a stage in that photo, I decided that I wasn’t going to do that anymore. That there’s so much that goes on in this world: talks, conferences, exhibitions, networking events and it’s about time that I try and set foot in all of those.
Time flies by so quick and so much can be fulfilled within that time and I want it to be more than just looking at my screen, scrolling through websites, walking to the high street and meeting deadlines. I want it to be educational and different and refreshing. I suggest you do the same.
